Typography is ART

What is typography? According to Aaris Sherin in an Introduction to Graphic Design, chapter 5; typography in the simplest form is the visual expression of the written word. During the Spring 2023 semester at Rockland Community College we were tasked to design multiple projects from social media campaigns, to billboards, and magazine advertisements,.

In an effort to create visual hierarchy using solely type, I leaned on the knowledge acquired in this text book, predominantly in chapter 5 which is based solely on typography.

For the Hudson Link project, I needed to be concise using their brand, from font to colors, and icons. In order to make this project stand out I used different size fonts and weights as well as color and pattern design.

In the project for social justice we had to choose and create an infographic to call attention to one of the 17 UN global issues, I chose Poverty. I started by researching why there is poverty and what is being done about about ending poverty. I came across information which states that their are currently 27 active conflicts around the world which are impeding the UN sustainable goal of eliminating poverty by 2030 not to mention COVID 19 caused them to loose four years of the fight to reduce or eliminate poverty.

When designing the infographic, I used a san serif font with a large family (Adelle Sans) and to give it a grunge weathered look I used the font (Bad Grundge) on the word war and increased its size. For the main header I increased the size significantly, and then used color to help highlight important information. My call to action for this project direct and to the point, in order to end poverty we must end war.

Typography is very important and can be used to convey a story or a message. You do not necessarily need visuals such as illustrations to deliver a message when using type correctly.
